Armageddon will not happen, but it will be tough on the front…

The situation on the frontline in Ukraine is likely to worsen in the coming weeks, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, Kirill Budanov, told the BBC’s Ukraine service.

His assessment comes as Ukrainian forces struggle to contain Russian troops who have gained ground in recent months and are expected to step up their offensive soon.

In our opinion, a rather difficult situation awaits us in the near future. But it is not catastrophic, and we need to understand that. Armageddon will not happen as many people are talking about now. But there will be problems starting from mid-May. I’m talking about the front in particular… Mid-May, early June will be a difficult period,” Budanov said.

During the weekend Russia said its forces had gained territory near the eastern city of Chasov Yar.

If the city, located on a strategic hill, falls, Kiev fears that it will open the way for Russia to other important cities in Donbass.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces want to capture the city by May 9when the Kremlin commemorates the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Kiev has been grappling with a growing munitions crisis for months, but the situation is expected to improve in the coming weeks as the US finally approved a $61 billion military aid package to help fight Moscow.
