World military spending reached an all-time high in 2023, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

“Total global defense spending reached $2.443 trillion in 2023. Thus, this spending reached the highest level ever recorded by SIPRI,” the institute said in a statement.

It is noted that the ten countries that spent the most on defense in 2023 are: USA, China, RussiaIndia, Saudi Arabia, Great Britain, Germany, Ukraine, France and Japan.

According to SIPRI data, the two countries with the largest spending in this area – the US (916 billion) and China (296 billion) – together formed about half of all military spending in the world last year. The two countries have the first and second largest economies in the world, respectively.

At the same time in 2023, The US increased its military spending compared to the previous year by 2.3%, and China – by 6%.

The defense costs of Russia, according to the data of the institute, in 2023 increased by 24% compared to 2022 and amounted to 109 billion dollars, which means that compared to 2014, i.e. in 10 years, Russia’s military spending has grown by 57%.

Ukraine ranks eighth in the world by the volume of military spending in 2023 – with 64.8 billion dollars, and compared to 2014, Kiev’s military spending has jumped more than 10 times.
