It’s hard to express what I think in public sometimes. I know the howls and hate it will cause. But why not say it? We are born to think and express our opinion, even if we are not right!
So I begin:

I hate Bulgarian turbo patriotism!

Also the stadium enthusiasm for or against the “soup”, for Levski, Loko or Slavia. “Bulgarian heroes” makes me feel sick, the ice dance in the river with pots and drums, the dancing in the square with the Kuker furs, horns and bells insults me that I am a native Bulgarian, the disputes with the Macedonian political class on both sides of this pitiful and a damaged state border, make me ashamed of the stupidity of both “nations”, which are so ridiculously at odds in this dangerous world for small states.

The vicarious pride in the mythical scientific feats of John Atanasov and that “we” discovered the computer, expressed with a fanatical gleam in the brandy-bleeding eyes of half-literate compatriots, that we are the smartest since the Jews, the claim that we laid the foundations of European civilization, that we are the authors of the alphabet, that we are the grandsons of Orpheus and co-founders of Troy, that together with Dionysius we discovered and spread wine and taught horsemanship to the surrounding Greeks and Achaeans, that we are the fairest and bravest nations in antiquity, and in The Middle Ages, that we are heroic warriors, who have not lost a single battle, but lost the wars, that someone else always blames us for our historical misfortunes, that we are special and exceptional, but we are hindered, that others and especially our neighbors are bad, and we are kind, hospitable and hardworking. Everything

this makes me sad

because of the self-delusion into which he led millions of Bulgarians and made them live like the blind men of Tsar Samuel. But this time they blinded themselves voluntarily. It is enough to ask a real professor of history to tell them the details of each of their historical illusions and false “facts”. We did not create the Thracian treasures and even genetically we have little in common with the Thracians. We have come from somewhere and today we inhabit lands where other ancient peoples lived before us and have disappeared.

Today’s Turks inhabiting the hill of Hisarluk, under which Schliemann discovered the remains of Troy, are not descendants of Hector and Priam. Nor are they the builders of Göbekli Tepe from 12,000 years ago, just as Varna’s oldest gold in the world is not the work of heroic Bulgarians. We are neither the best, nor the sinless and just, just as we are not the worst, of course. We are average Balkan people, similar to the rest, and in some respects even worse. It is enough to visit, without prejudice, neighboring Turkey and even Greece, to see that the average Turk is, as it were, more honest, lies and steals less than the Bulgarian, and that he is a very hospitable and hardworking neighbor. Also, that the Greeks are more devout Christians, and though they have defects similar to ours, are able to keep their state much better organized than we are. And that’s just for the neighbors…

I know that “hoorah patriotism” was cultivated and somewhat necessary for state-building purposes, especially after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the search for the national identity lost for 5 centuries. In the name of this and for the sake of national unification, hundreds of thousands of priceless Bulgarian lives were wasted in several territorial wars and in the end the goals were not achieved. The greatness that was sought has actually become

historical failure

and national independence from the great powers was not achieved. It was replaced by vassal and even slave subordination under communism.

I dream that the Bulgarians will stop deriving their personal and national pride from some goal scored by a Bulgarian, but not their foot, during a football match in the opponent’s goal, but from their own personal achievements. Each one, individually, alone and in everything for which he is personally responsible, to achieve the world’s peaks with his efforts and with the talents given to him by nature. Then to begin to be proud and present to himself and to all the people of the Planet with his own name. And not to pretend that he is Stoichkov. And if he considers himself a European Christian, let him enter the church, leave the quackery and heathen costumes in the attic for the time being, at least until Surva and put order in it, by first driving out of it the old hooks who obey and bow to the Kagebei godless Emperor in Moscow. For starters…
