The Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Timur Ivanov, has been detained on suspicion of taking a bribe, the press service of the Investigative Committee of Russia reported, as quoted by TASS.
“On suspicion of committing a crime under para. 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (taking a bribe), the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Timur Vladimirovich Ivanov has been detained,” the brief press release said.
President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu have been informed of the deputy defense minister’s detention, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
As deputy minister, Timur Ivanov was responsible for the organization of property management, troop quarters, housing and medical insurance. Under his supervision were the planning of the supply of goods, construction works and services within the framework of government procurement for defense. He was also responsible for engineering studies, architectural and structural design, construction, reconstruction and overhaul of Ministry of Defense facilities.
49-year-old Timur Ivanov was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense by presidential decree in May 2016. Before that, from 2013 to 2016, he was the general director of Oboronstroy, subordinate to the Ministry of Defense, specializing in the construction of housing for the military, as well as socially significant and strategic military facilities. Ivanov is included in the Forbes list of “Russia’s Richest Security Officials – 2019” with a 2018 family income of 136.7 million rubles.
Before joining the Ministry of Defense in May-November 2012, Timur Ivanov was the Deputy Prime Minister of the Moscow Region. During this period, the governor of the Moscow region was Sergei Shoigu. Before that, Timur Ivanov worked in the energy industry: in the department for the construction of nuclear facilities of the Ministry of Atomic Energy, he was the vice president of “Atomstroyexport”, a member of the Board of Directors of Inter RAO UES, and he headed the Russian Energy Agency of the Ministry of Energy.
