People will have to buy a five-euro ticket to gain access to the heart of the city

Mass protests in Venice after the introduction of a tourist tax. On the occasion of the national holiday of Italy, yesterday was also the beginning of the one-month trial period.

For the next 28 days, people will have to buy a five-euro ticket to gain access to the heart of the city. The new measure aims to reduce the huge influx of tourists.

Although there is no checkpoint, control will take place with random checks, with officials imposing fines of €50 to €300 on anyone who fails to register. Local residents strongly opposed the decision, which they say is not even legitimate. There were also clashes with the police.

From today: €5 fee to visit Venice

“Today is a sad day for Venice, because our city is turning into a museum, an amusement park. This is not a city that deserves such an insult. This access ticket, defined as a way to control flow, does not regulate anything. There is no maximum number of visitors that can enter here. So the city, which supposedly suffers from the excessive number of tourists, will suffer even more”, believes the municipal councilor of the city, Giovanni Andrea Martini.

“We are against this measure because it will achieve nothing. It won’t curb over-tourism, Venice’s real problem. In addition, this ordinance is so complex, with so many exceptions, that it will be difficult to apply it adequately”, explained Cristina Romieri, a resident of the city.
