The bridge that connects Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula was blown up early this morning. Hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 70th birthday, the facility burst into flames. Three casualties were reported.

Moscow accused Ukraine, and Kyiv neither denied nor confirmed. However, it remains unclear what exactly caused the explosion. According to the most common version, it is an explosion of a truck passing on the highway. It ignited tanks from a train passing at that moment on the parallel railway line. According to another version, the bridge was hit by a missile.

The facility over the Kerch Strait has been of key importance to Russia since Ukraine’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. It is also the pride of Putin, who personally drove the first train in 2019, when it was the official opening of the bridge connecting the strait between the Sea of ​​Azov and the Black Sea.

Moscow wants to fully open the traffic within 24 hours

In the evening, Russian news agencies reported that traffic had been restored. According to the information, the traffic is controlled by the police, allowing only 10 cars at a time to allow for more thorough control. In the evening footage was shown of a train running on the railway track for a test. Moscow’s ambition is to restore the carriageway to full two-lane traffic by tomorrow, although the footage clearly shows that an entire section of the two-lane road has fallen into the sea.

Food and fuel regime in Crimea

Sergei Aksenov, who heads the Russian government in Crimea, reassured the locals today that the peninsula has enough food supplies for 55 days and fuel for 15 days. However, a regime was introduced on the amount of food that could be purchased, as well as restrictions on the sale of fuel in Sevastopol.

Hotels in Crimea announced that due to the problem with movement on the bridge, guests can stay for another 24 hours for free.

Putin is beefing up defenses

Meanwhile, Putin signed a decree to strengthen the protection of the Crimean bridge, the power transmission system between the territory of Russia and Crimea, as well as the gas pipeline between the Krasnodar region and Crimea. Russia’s Federal Security Service is responsible for enforcement, and the “yellow” terrorist threat level code in Crimea has been extended until October 23.

Earlier in the day, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced that arrests of military personnel had begun in Moscow. And according to the Ukrainian agency Unian, units of the “Dzerzhinsky” operational division, which is considered the elite of the Russian Guard, as well as police units, entered the Russian capital. The military units in the perimeter of the Russian capital were put on high alert.

“Crimea, the bridge, the beginning. Everything illegal must be destroyed. Everything stolen must be returned to Ukraine. Russia must be expelled from every territory it has occupied,” Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, tweeted today.

And Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded: “The reaction of the regime in Kyiv to the destruction of civilian infrastructure “testifies to its terrorist nature.”

Podoliak later added: “The explosion and the fire on the bridge are a concrete expression of the conflict between the Russian Federal Security Service and private military companies, on the one hand, and the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of Russia, on the other,” reports BTA. According to him, we are witnessing the beginning of large-scale negative processes in Russia. “The controllability of the security forces dropped sharply, major conflicts began among the Russian special services.
