In the new edition of Smolyan Speaks, we will discuss important topics that we know as a society, but which are not often talked about, or at least not often enough to cause a qualitative change and drive for action. The general atmosphere of our society acquires a variety of shades – some bright, others dark, others colorful and hopeful, and others gray, depressed and even with a hint of hopelessness. Despair finds expression both in our lexicon through conciliatory expressions and phrases, passive criticism and fruitless resentment, and in our minds through preconceived notions of failure in any endeavor, to the black-eyed conviction that “nothing works here.” This attitude, in addition to bringing with it harmful effects for the development of our society, is also an escape from the responsibility of the individual as a building block of society. There seems to be a lack of awareness that a vibrant and successful community is made up of committed, courageous and responsible individuals.

Due to the harsh nature of life in the mountains, the people of Rhodope are responsible and sober people, practical and with a sense of belonging to their native region, and their humility and hard work distinguish them as people with the potential to set a tone in our society that will break down the walls of the despair and fruitless lamentation of the seemingly hopeless situation before us in one respect or another. The Rhodope Bulgarian has traditionally struggled with difficult conditions and adversities, and that is why he has learned to do what he needs to do and prepare for the future now. But are we not losing these qualities of ours, are we not, in the course of historical, socio-political and economic development and changes in our society, taking the slanted path of despair, inaction and irresponsibility towards what is happening around us, even though paradoxically the circumstances require calling precisely on the opposite phenomena and qualities of our collective social reaction despite the fact that we have not a few reasons for self-confidence, not a few examples of success, not a few inspiring individuals who, with their work as citizens and professionals, show the power of civic activity and self-initiative.

In our upcoming meeting, we will present to you two such personalities who fully correspond to the image of the active citizen who has realized the power he possesses to change and shape the environment and the spirit around him through purposeful action in the desired direction.

With them we will look for answers to why we cannot communicate directly and openly and solve problems together and how to change this? How do we find the strength and energy to take our destiny into our own hands as responsible and active citizens? In what should we find reason for action instead of fruitless despair?
How to change negative attitudes? How can we even ask to change ourselves?
How, through civic participation, can we create favorable conditions for life in all its aspects and form a spirit of community that has a common direction in the future?

On these and many other questions related to our topic, we will reflect and talk together on 02.05 at 18.00 in the “Peter Staykov” hall of the KDC – Smolyan.

The guests: Andreana Trifonova, ecologist and Marian Bozukov, an actor – two exceptional personalities who overcome the negative and actively build a better environment for themselves and the people around them.
