In Bulgarian politics, there is currently very little conversation about what should happen, and politics should be precisely a conversation about the future. That’s what he said on the show “Bulgaria, Europe and the world in focus” on Radio “Focus” MEP Radan Kanev.

According to him, we face many problems and risks, but we also have many opportunities as a society, but we rarely hear from politicians what lies ahead. According to him, there was an attempt at such a conversation in the negotiation process before the rotation failed, in the memorandum proposed by the PP-DB, then in the negotiations for a political agreement. “However, at the moment when these negotiations broke down, and they seem to have broken down precisely because of the GERB party’s unwillingness to have this conversation about the future seriously, we fell into a tone of personal antagonism accompanied by a very ugly smear campaign – something that makes real political conversation almost impossible at the moment. I say almost – there are people who are trying.”

In Europe, Bulgaria is known above all for the record number of elections that have been held since 2020. And Bulgaria is causing concern, as it creates uncertainty in very difficult times, in a global security crisis, the MEP also believes. “It’s not pleasant for anyone, but for us it should at least be pleasant that Bulgaria is an insecure country.”

The European Parliament is a place where the individual person, the individual politician, MP matters the most, as there is no fixed majority, no parties of discipline. The European Parliament is a legislative body, Radan Kanev also said, explaining that the internal policy of the European Union is carried out there by creating legislation that affects every European.

He also talked about his work as rapporteur for the Industrial Emissions Directive. “This is a process that, for example, took me two years as the main rapporteur, and which literally came into force the day we signed the entry into force of this directive, which affects the health of every citizen through the cleanliness of the air, water and soil and practically every industry in the European Union. These are continuous negotiations with the representatives of the industries, especially in Bulgaria. So the achievement of a Bulgarian MP being a rapporteur on important legislation for Bulgaria is actually much more than a person can achieve in the Bulgarian national parliament, where usually pre-fixed groups vote as one, i.e. one person matters little,” he explained.

Radan Kanev also said that the lists of PP-DB are before final approval. And regarding the persons on the lists, in his words, it is obvious “and given that we are talking about very strong recognizable public figures, it is also clear in advance that the arrangement is purely formal.” He also shared that he is a sure candidate from the PP-DB list for the new European Parliament as a representative of the DSB – the only party in which he has ever been a member.

According to him, the balance in the European Parliament will not change and remains united in its support for the struggle for Ukraine’s independence.
