Plamen Panov opened an international conference dedicated to “Green and sustainable sport”

Over 150 Bulgarian and international participants, including sports organizers, ecologists, municipal and state officials, sports clubs and sports federations, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, business representatives in the field of sports and 20 guest speakers are meeting today at the House of the “Boris Hristov” culture, where the conference “Sport for a healthy planet” is held throughout the day.

This is the first planetary health conference of its kind in Bulgaria, showing the connection between sports and the concept of planetary health, which emphasizes the interrelationship between people’s well-being and the environment. Throughout the day, participants will engage in constructive dialogue on the latest trends in sustainable sports practices and discuss building a sustainable sporting future.

The organizer of the conference is the BG Be active team, the partner is the “Culture, archeology and cultural heritage” department of the Municipality of Plovdiv. The presenter of the conference is Edith Unjiyan, who, in addition to her role as moderator, greeted the participants with several musical performances, accompanied by a guitar.

Among the guests of the conference are Plamen Panov – Deputy Mayor for Culture, Archeology and Tourism of Plovdiv Municipality, Toni Stoycheva – Mayor of “Zapaden” District and Dobromira Kostova – Deputy Chairman of the Municipal Council – Plovdiv.

The conference was opened by Plamen Panov and Laska Nenova – organizer of the conference and one of the founders of the idea BG Be active.

“For the second week now, I have the pleasure of participating together with BG Be Active in a series of events that firstly set a good example and secondly – create sustainability. It is very important to work together and well with civil society, and here I must note that BG Be Active is a long-standing and extremely good partner of the Plovdiv municipality, through which we not only hear the voice of civil society, but also perform the function of a good corrective. As deputy mayor for culture, I must proudly note that Plovdiv is the city that invests the most funds in cultural events in Bulgaria, we actively promote cultural life, but also encourage people to protect the environment. House of Culture “Boris Hristov” is a good example of how we think in the direction of how to recycle, collect separately, we have two wonderful benches made of recycled materials, a bottle holder, a gift from BG Be active. These are small steps, but only through them the big ones are achieved. We will continue to stimulate the topic of environmental protection at our festivals. It is important to work together, it is important for Plovdiv to manage its waste qualitatively, it is important for people to play sports”said Deputy Mayor Plamen Panov, wishing successful work at the forum.

The “Sports for a Healthy Planet” conference aims to promote dialogue and cooperation between experts in the field of the environment, urban planning and sports, in accordance with the EU’s goals for environmental sustainability in Bulgaria and the region. The program of the event includes key reports, presentations and discussions, and in the afternoon the organizers plan to hold master classes that will give the participants the opportunity to enrich their knowledge and skills. Among the guest speakers are representatives of business, local government – in the education, sports and environmental sectors, representatives of Bulgarian and international sports federations, sports professionals and green experts. The message “Sport for a healthy planet” will be conveyed through a review of the strategies, approaches and recommendations of the expert group working in the field of Green Sports, to the European Commission. Measures to build a sustainable sports society in the era of growing problems related to pollution and climate change will also be considered, along with the need for innovation and cooperation.
