The joint multidisciplinary expert commission on historical and educational issues between the Republic of North Macedonia and Bulgaria will meet for the second day today in Skopje, MIA and BTA announced.

Yesterday, after arriving at the Macedonian MFA, the Bulgarian historians did not want to give a statement and reveal details of what will be discussed at the meeting, the agency notes.

At yesterday’s meeting, the Macedonian team was joined by Dimitar Lorovski, historian and professor at the Institute of National History, replacing Vancho Georgiev, who left the commission last year.

On August 15, the mixed Bulgarian-Macedonian commission on historical issues adopted and published recommendations regarding the improvement of history textbooks for the 6th grade in the Republic of North Macedonia and 5th grade in Bulgaria, as well as recommendations for joint veneration of personalities from the Middle Ages – St. .St. Cyril and Methodius, St. Clement, St. Nahum and King Samuel. These recommendations were adopted by the Joint Intergovernmental Commission established in accordance with the Agreement on Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation between the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Bulgaria.

The co-chairman of the Macedonian team in the Commission, Dragi Georgiev, after the announcement of the recommendations, at a press conference dedicated to the textbooks, explained that the goal is to change things about which there is misunderstanding and which can contribute to disrupting the relations between the two peoples and the two countries and which can cause tension, hatred among the younger generations. Georgiev estimated that the period of the 19th and 20th centuries will be one of the most difficult that the Commission will discuss and emphasized that solutions to the historical misunderstandings that exist between Macedonian and Bulgarian historiography will not be accepted at any cost.
