The torrential rain made it difficult to travel on the Trakia highway

Thousands of acres of agricultural produce were destroyed by the hailstorm that hit Central Bulgaria on Thursday. Wheat and corn fields, rose fields, as well as many vegetable and fruit gardens were destroyed. In many places in Plovdiv, Starozagorsk and Sliven, the day began with an assessment – can anything be saved at all.

“I have never seen anything like this, it rained thick ice for half an hour. Everything is destroyed”, said Sofiyka Koleva.

“I earned everything for my family. Now there is nothing – the fruits and vegetables have been destroyed”, said Anastasia Cholakova.

Instead of picking roses in the village of Banya, the farmers are already calculating how big the loss is.

“We have about 2,000 acres of perennial crops. This is a lot, and when one such hailstone passes, it takes you back 5 years”, says Marian Kurdov.

This is the case in dozens of settlements. About 5,000 acres of corn and sunflower were destroyed in Zetivo.

“The situation is deplorable. Everything will be at the expense of the farmers. We have missile sites, but again there was a serious storm”, explained the mayor of the village, Ivan Ganev.

Within a 7-day period, farmers can submit applications to expert commissions from the “Agriculture” regional directorates to examine the damage, so that they can then receive compensation.
