The new sexy SUV from Volkswagen

--

Volkswagen is increasingly confidently claiming that a bright electric future is yet to come for the brand.

The company has a strong presence at this year’s Beijing auto show, showing off several models, including the Volkswagen ID.4, the production electric SUV that’s a bit boring.

Therefore, a concept SUV that comes with the request that it is aimed at the youngest consumers is far more interesting.

Volkswagen ID. CODE is a compact electric crossover with a far more distinctive design.

While the Volkswagen ID.4 could be mistaken for a Tesla Model X to the untrained eye, absent the emblems on the front and some distinctive details, the concept electric car is unlike any other competitor on the market.

ID. The CODE has a far lower, sleek and subtle profile with a sloping rear and a long, narrow LED strip instead of taillights.

The front part no longer has any imitation of a grille and instead we see two elongated LED headlights. The brand calls them “interactive and winking eyes” and emphasizes that they give a more sympathetic and friendly look to the electric car.

Volkswagen do not hide that their other inspiration was the game Gran Turismo and the smooth flowing lines of the sports racers there.

To appeal to tech geeks, Volkswagen ID. CODE is packed with new goodies.

First of all, the electric SUV has a fourth-level autonomous driving system. It is equipped with a wide range of sensors and cameras and allows the driver to almost completely give up driving the electric car and relax in his comfortable seat.

And when we said “seat” – the two front seats in the ID. CODE can be rotated 180 degrees and reclined to a near-horizontal position for comfortable sleeping.

The cabin has interactive lighting controlled by the car’s software. Each driver can create their own software avatar that has its own welcome tune and preferred interior lighting.

All this is switched on automatically as soon as the driver approaches the electric car.

The interactive lights, point out from Volkswagen should also “interact with other drivers in autonomous driving”.

Nothing is known about the battery, except that it is lithium-ion. There is also no information on what mileage such an SUV would have.

Anyway, in their blog, Volkswagen emphasizes that for the time being, Volkswagen ID. CODE is only a concept electric car. This is implied to say the least by promises of such autonomous governance, which has so far been proven unworkable for a number of reasons.

The other technologies that the company showed in Beijing don’t sound all that fantastic. The design is definitely quite sexy and we would like to see it in mass production.

There is hope that this will happen after all, because Volkswagen emphasizes that the ID. CODE is “the beginning of a whole new generation of SUVs”.
