Manchester United manager Erik ten Haag admitted his side were lucky not to suffer a shock upset by second division Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-finals.

At Wembley, the Red Devils were leading 3-0 until the 70th minute, but allowed their opponents to equalise, and in extra time, Coventry’s fourth goal was disallowed by the VAR system due to a minimal offside. In the end, United prevailed on penalties and will challenge Manchester City for the trophy in a repeat of last year’s final, which was won by the “citizens”.

“We play at a very high level and then at a very low level in the same game. It’s inexplicable. I have to teach my players, that’s clear. We have to do better in those situations. We’re failing ourselves. Today (b.r. – yesterday) we got away with it,” commented Ten Haag after the success.

Asked if what happened at Wembley was “shameful” for Manchester United, the Dutchman replied:

“At the end of the day, it’s an achievement to reach the final two years in a row. I can see the mistakes we’re making, but this result is not shameful,” he said.

The FA Cup final between Manchester United and Manchester City will be played on May 25.
