These days, the market in Plovdiv makes an impression on cherries, which are sold for BGN 50/kg. The owner of the serigia claims that the cherries are his production – from the tree in his yard.
The high price of the product startles shoppers, especially pensioners, bTV reported. Ivanka Mollova, a pensioner, says she will refrain from buying for now because the price is high. “We will wait for them to become cheaper even then”, says Mollova.
There are also cherries on the neighboring stalls. They go for BGN 40/kg. and are imported from Greece. The seller says that he has been loading the goods for several days and is looking for them. 100 grams is taken, sometimes more, depending on the possibilities.
“For every train there are passengers, there are people with opportunities and they take the more expensive one,” says one of the sellers at the Thursday market in Plovdiv.
Native cherries are not missing either – from Brestovitsa for BGN 25/kg, as well as Brestnik for BGN 5.
The owners of cherry orchards say that due to the warm weather, the native production is expected to be in the markets en masse within two weeks. Then prices are expected to normalize.
Growers fear frost and wonder how they will protect the trees, since the fire department does not allow fires around them.
