Washington is poised to impose more sanctions on China over the alleged transfer of dual-use goods and components believed to be used by Russia’s military-industrial complex, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference in Beijing after his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the US official recalled that Washington had already imposed sanctions on more than 100 Chinese entities and was “fully prepared to act” and “take additional measures”.

Blinken said China’s alleged support for Russia’s defense industry raises concerns not only about the situation in Ukraine, but also about “the medium- and long-term threat that many Europeans feel strongly that Russia poses to them.”

Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal also reported that the US is preparing sanctions that could shut some Chinese banks out of the global financial system if Beijing does not cut economic ties with Russia.

The publication claims that US officials believe trade with China has allowed Russia to rebuild its military-industrial capacity and could help it defeat Ukraine in a war of attrition.

Beijing strongly rejected accusations that it was “instigating” the conflict in Ukraine and instead accused NATO of provoking the crisis by continuing its expansion into Europe and refusing to respect Russia’s national security concerns.

After his meeting with Blinken, President Xi proposed that the US and China “be partners, not rivals” and strive to achieve “mutual success and not harm each other.”

I proposed three basic principles: mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation. They are not only a summary of past experience, but also a guide for the future,” the Chinese leader was quoted as saying.

Beijing maintains a policy of neutrality regarding the war in Ukraine, with Chinese officials repeatedly saying the country does not sell arms to either Russia or Ukraine. Earlier this month, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning insisted that China “regulates the export of dual-use items in accordance with laws and regulations,” urging “relevant countries” not to “slander or attack normal relations between China and Russia “.
