Only in “Today Bulgaria”: On World Pilot’s Day – the glorious past and sad present of Ravnets Air Base (photos and video)

--

Today, April 26, we celebrate World Pilot’s Day. It was on this occasion that “Today Bulgaria” decided to recall the glorious history of the Ravnets Air Base. There, from where the Bulgarian eagles guarded the native airspace. And we will do it with a film by Vasil Madzharov, which he himself provided to us.

You can read more about our new column “10 gastronomic minutes with Maya” here.

In 1953, the 15th Fighter Aviation Regiment with 2 squadrons of aircraft was re-based in Ravnets from Bezmer Airport (Yambolsko). Later that year, a third squadron was also re-based. In 1957, the MiG-17 entered service. Currently, the exhibit you see in the video, with reg. No. 22, is located in the aviation museum in Krumovo.

In 1963, the third squadron was re-based in Balchik. In 1966, the first squadron was rearmed with the MiG-21. In 1989, the still formidable MiG-29 arrived at Ravnets Air Base.

And in 1999, the planes left Ravnets. 2002 was the saddest year for Burgas military aviation. Then the airbase is closed!

At the moment, everything is totally looted. Residents of surrounding settlements use the base as a landfill. While nature slowly swallows everything. Did you know that it was from the 5th Ravnets fighter air base that the pilots of the “Sea Eagles” took off – the only demonstration group that Bulgaria has ever had.
