T Aiwan was hit by a series of at least 10 earthquakes, the strongest of which measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, according to the island’s Central Meteorological Administration.
According to an AFP journalist, no tsunami warnings followed the quakes, which set off cellphone alarms in the capital Taipei, just days after dozens of tremors rocked the island.

The strongest earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, occurred just offshore at 2:21 a.m. (6:21 p.m. GMT) at a shallow depth of 24.9 km.
It was followed by several weaker tremors before another strong earthquake struck at 2:49 a.m. on land about 40 km from the east coast city of Hualien at a depth of 18.9 km.
According to data from the Taiwan Meteorological Agency, a total of ten earthquakes of varying strength were registered after midnight.
The National Fire Agency said there were no immediate reports of damage.
The series of tremors comes after buildings in Taiwan were rocked by a series of earthquakes earlier in the week, one of which reached a magnitude of 6.3 in eastern Hualien.

The government said they were aftershocks after the deadly 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the island more than two weeks ago, which Taiwan said was “the strongest in 25 years”.
At least 17 people died after the quake triggered landslides that blocked roads and severely damaged buildings around the main city of Hualien.
