Taiwan has begun a week-long military exercise with live ammunition to test the combat capabilities of various infantry, armored and helicopter assault units, DPA reported.

The maneuvers that began today are routinely held every quarter. They will continue until Thursday, a spokesman for Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense told DPA.

The exercises are taking place in Pingtun County, in the southern part of the island. It is expected that “Super Cobra” and “Apache” attack helicopters will be included in them, BTA reported.

These are the second exercises by Taiwan’s armed forces with live ammunition since high-ranking US officials, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, visited Taipei, angering Beijing, DPA noted.

In response, the Chinese military conducted a five-day series of exercises of the Air Force, Navy and Missile Forces with live ammunition. Many analysts saw in these maneuvers a “rehearsal” for a blockade of Taiwan.

Beijing reacts sharply to official contacts of foreign countries with Taiwan, because it considers the island part of China. The democratically elected government in Taipei firmly rejects this view and has long considered Taiwan an independent territory, DPA said.
