Residents of two Smolyan villages undertook to repair the only road to the settlements themselves. People from the villages of Valchan and Zmievo have collected money to pay for an excavator to level the unpaved section of the road.
Immediately after the fork for the villages of Valchan and Zmievo, the asphalt ends and a dirt road begins, littered with potholes and large ruts. People complain that the lot is not maintained and so they have to grab the shovels themselves.
“No one is paying attention, so here we are left to the whims of fate. Look how many stones have fallen, no one removes them, big lumps. I don’t know how the drivers pass on their own,” said the resident of Valchan, Chavdar Nachev.
“When the children come to see us, they say the road is bad, the road is very bad and they don’t want to come then,” said a resident of Valchan.
“They smash the cars, there are no other problems. The place is nice and they are happy to come, they are happy to come to the baira, but it is not possible,” says another resident of the village.
In Zmievo, Mona Choban has a guest house where she welcomes tourists from all over the world. Her guests, the Dessauvage family from Belgium, also work on the road.
“It’s 2,500 kilometers by car from Belgium to here. The road was wonderful, in perfect condition, except for the last five kilometers that you can see,” said Albert Dessovage.
The elderly raised money themselves to hire an excavator to level the most broken sections.
“The road is municipal, but despite everything, all the people gave as much as they could. Grandma, who had set aside 50 BGN from her pension, I have no idea how much her pension is, it is hardly big, tied in a plastic bag with a knot. We tired of talking to each other about what needs to be done, we decided it was time to act,” said Mona Choban.
According to the people of the municipality, they can send an excavator at least twice a year to level the road. They also insist on hiring a minimum wage person to take care of his maintenance.
