Georgieva’s remarks come as EU countries prepare for a tough winter ahead as energy and gas prices hit record highs, fueled by Russia’s decision to cut gas supplies to Europe indefinitely.

Central bankers must continue to tighten monetary policy and policymakers must resist pressure to spend public funds in a way that could fuel inflation. This was stated by the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva.

“Fighting inflation is a top priority everywhere,” she told an event at the Bruegel think tank in Brussels, adding that “fiscal policy must provide cushions for the most vulnerable people… there will be pressure to do more for everyone and this pressure must be resisted”.
