Members of the European Parliament have sent a letter to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Prime Minister Ana Brnabic calling on the authorities to allow the Europride planned for September in Belgrade to take place, as they say it is a “peaceful tool for political advocacy and one of the ways for the crystallization of the universal right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly”, reports the “Danas” newspaper, quoted by BTA.

As reported by the European Western Balkans portal, the letter, initiated by the interparliamentary group on LGBTQ+ rights, was signed by 145 MEPs, including six vice-presidents of the European Parliament, five heads of parliamentary groups, as well as the chairman of the EP Delegation for ties with Serbia, i.e. The Commission for Stabilization and Accession to the EU – Serbia.

MEPs believe that despite the fact that there are threats to the safety of participants, “a total ban on the parade is not the right solution”.

“Unfortunately, the situation of anti-LGBTQ+ counter-protests, which are often violent, is not new to Pride and therefore the police response must be swift, effective and proportionate. If needed, more police must be deployed to ensure the effective conduct of the Pride and other events,” the letter to the authorities in Serbia states.

MEPs remind Serbia of its obligations under the Council of Europe, which imply that member states must ensure the implementation of laws and take appropriate measures to protect participants in peaceful demonstrations in favor of human rights.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said last week that Europride, planned for September 12-18 in Belgrade, would not take place. Vucic later said that there will be no change to this decision, even if Presidents Biden, Putin or Zelensky call for it.

The leader of the right-wing movement Dveri Boško Obradović said yesterday that his parliamentary group will submit a bill to ban the promotion of homosexuality and transgender types among minors, which will also include a ban on gay parades for the next hundred years, Serbian agencies reported.

Obradovic told journalists in the parliament that he called on the Ministry of the Interior to urgently ban the holding of Europride, and the organizers of the event to comply with the decisions of the relevant state bodies.

In the event that the organizers do not give up, the same day in Belgrade will take place “the largest national lithium procession with the participation of over 100,000 family people who will not allow anyone to insult everything Serbian, traditional, family”, announced Obradovic.
