Since July, however, according to him, there has been almost no sunflower import, because precisely because of the so-called solidarity corridors market routes for exports from Ukraine are largely normalized and sunflower is now processed in Ukraine and exported as oil and other value-added products. He is adamant that there are no problems with storage capacity. “Even when we had Ukrainian imports, there was plenty of space in our bases and those of our partners,” he says.

According to him, Bulgaria has actually been a net importer of sunflower for years. It usually comes from Romania and Moldova. From Ukraine and Russia – rarely and incidentally, but there have been such cases. “It seems to me that the passions of the Bulgarian producers are now more related to the pre-election situation and the prices that fell, and they expected to sell at quite high prices,” he says.

That the problem is the prices are also confirmed by producers, according to whom, however, there were increased imports from Ukraine in August as well. “There was a lull in the import of grain. For ten days there were no trucks around the bases in Dobrich, the price of sunflower went up and reached BGN 1,250/ton. The moment the Ukrainian trucks started moving again, the price started to collapse,” says Radostina Zhekova , chairman of the Dobrudja Union of Grain Producers, quoted by “Agri.bg”. At the moment, according to NAZ, the transactions are in the order of BGN 1,000 per ton, and according to the bulletin of the Sofia Commodity Exchange for the period September 7-9 – BGN 1,200 per ton.

Promises of more aid

“The request to limit this import by the state, which is also regulated at the European level, is simply ridiculous and anti-market. In my opinion, there are some rather political arguments behind it or wishes to extract some more aid, although this is a sector to which huge subsidies are usually directed,” a market analyst commented to “Capital”.
