Turkish President Recep Erdogan issued a threat to Greece. He warned Athens that it would pay a “high price” if it continued to, quote, “harass” Turkish planes over the Aegean Sea and accused its eastern neighbor of occupying islands off the Turkish coast. Greece, for its part, recently complained that Ankara was violating its airspace with military drones and announced defensive measures.

“Greece – look at history. If you continue, you will pay a high price,” Erdogan said during a rally in the Black Sea region.

In recent months, Turkey has complained about what it describes as “provocative actions” by Athens, saying they are undermining peace efforts.

Athens recently accused Ankara of flying over Greek islands and violating its airspace by using Bayraktar military drones. In a statement, Greece’s defense ministry said it was seeking to protect the Aegean Sea from drone attacks by deploying countermeasures on the islands.

Turkey claims Greece is deploying troops on Aegean islands in violation of peace treaties signed after the First and Second World Wars. And in his speech today, the Turkish president accused Greece of “occupying” the islands.

“When the time comes, we will do what is necessary. As we say, we may come suddenly one night,” he added. Erdogan made similar statements when he talked about starting a military operation in neighboring Syria.

In June, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Ankara would challenge Greece’s sovereignty over the islands if Athens continued to send troops there.
